Ruptured Disc Treatment

The intervertebral discs that provide cushion between the vertebrae are comprised of a soft, jelly-like material covered with a hard shell. Due to degeneration with aging, injury or other factors, this outer shell can rupture, allowing the soft interior to leak into the spinal canal. This is referred to as a ruptured disc and can cause pain and other symptoms as the fluid puts pressure on the nerve root inside the spinal canal. At Atlanta Spine & Orthopaedics, we offer effective and often minimally invasive treatments for ruptured discs.

Depending on the severity of symptoms and other factors, treatment for a ruptured disc can vary from conservative options like physical therapy and medication to more extreme methods. In some cases, surgery can benefit a person with a ruptured disc, removing some of the disc tissue to relieve pressure. However, there are minimally invasive techniques that Dr. Bhatti can use to minimize downtime and accelerate recovery.

What are the Symptoms and Causes of Ruptured Discs?

Symptoms of a ruptured disc can include localized pain, numbness/tingling, muscle weakness, radiating pain and loss of movement. A ruptured disc can happen anywhere in the spine, but is more common in the cervical or lumber regions (neck or lower back). The cause is usually from degeneration of the outer shell from aging; the wall of the disc loses water content and elasticity, making it vulnerable when it is compressed. However, a trauma such as an auto accident, strain or severe fall can also cause a disc rupture.

If you have been diagnosed with a ruptured disc or are experiencing the symptoms of a ruptured disc, contact Atlanta Spine & Orthopaedics today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bhatti. There are effective treatments available to relieve the pain and other symptoms you are experiencing.
