Botulinum toxin injections are used to treat various medical conditions. They are noted to primarily help reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. They are used to help with neck spasms, chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder.
WHY IT IS DONE
The injections block chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. The following are some examples of various medical conditions and how BOTOX® injections can help:
- Cervical dystonia: BOTOX® injections are indicated for this medical condition to reduce the severity of abnormal head position and neck pain caused by involuntary muscle contractions.
- Spasticity: Increased muscle tone in the upper and lower limbs can be relaxed with BOTOX® toxin injections
- Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, botulinum toxin injections may help reduce headache frequency.
HOW IT IS DONE
This procedure is done in office. The area that is going to be injected will be prepped with Betadine and draped in sterile fashion. Multiple injection sites will be identified and the injections will be administered intramuscularly. One dose will be divided across specific areas
AFTER THE PROCEDURE
Expect to resume your normal daily activities right after the procedure. Take care, though, not to rub or massage the treated areas. This can cause the toxin to migrate to a different area.
Please let your healthcare provider know if you experience any of the following symptoms immediately after the procedure: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Get medical help right away if you experience symptoms at any time.
RESULTS
Botulinum toxin injections usually begin working a few days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. To maintain the effect, patients many need regular follow-up injections at 12 weeks and 24 weeks to reach effectiveness.
